Shaye Tamatoa's Journey with Kiwi Crunch

At Kiwi Crunch, we believe in growing more than just apples, we grow futures too. One inspiring example of that is Shaye Tamatoa, who began his journey with us as an 18-year-old school leaver back in 2017. Since those early days, Shaye’s dedication and drive have seen him grow, from full-time employee to Foreman, and now to Assistant Manager.

Shaye is currently working toward his Level 5 Diploma in Horticulture Production through the Eastern Institute of Technology. His journey began with the Seeds programme, an introduction to the horticulture industry that helped him gain the foundational knowledge and qualifications to secure a permanent position with Kiwi Crunch.

“Since getting a permanent position with Kiwi Crunch, they’ve helped support me through gaining experience and knowledge alongside my horticulture studies at EIT,” says Shaye. “My manager Brent has been my mentor, signing off all my practical assessments and providing the expertise I need to succeed in my studies.”

As part of his apprenticeship, Shaye was given the freedom to express his creativity - and he certainly delivered. One of his standout projects was designing a snakes-and-ladders-style game, where the ups and downs represent real-life market access issues outside of the grower’s control. It’s a clever and engaging way to understand the challenges of the horticulture industry, and it shows how innovative thinking can make a real impact.

We’re incredibly proud of Shaye and everything he’s achieved. His journey reflects what Kiwi Crunch is all about - supporting our people to grow, thrive, and shape the future of horticulture.
